HOW TO CONDUCT A HEALTH CHECK AFTER A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

On behalf of Mike Breen March 29, 2017

If you find yourself involved in a motor vehicle collision, such as along I-65, you know that you will face challenges in the near future.

Even if you’ve traveled this interstate hundreds of times in the past, you never know what could happen in the future. This is why you need to prepare yourself for anything that could come your way.

There are many steps to take in the event of a motor vehicle collision. At some point, you’ll want to learn more about the cause of the crash and your legal rights. However, before you do that, there is one other thing you need to think about: your health.

There is nothing more important than your health, which is why you need to receive immediate medical treatment following an on-the-road collision.

Here are some of the many steps you can take when conducting a health check on your own:

  • Check yourself for injuries. Remain in place as you examine your body in an attempt to learn more about any injuries. If you’re unable to move, stay put until help arrives. Some injuries, such as those to the neck or back, can worsen if you move.

  • Check on your passengers. If you’re able to move, don’t hesitate to check on the health of your passengers. Ask them questions. Visually examine their body. This is especially important if there are children in your vehicle, as they may not be able to communicate any pain or discomfort.

  • Attempt to move to safety. This is not always possible, but if you can you should move your car to safety. If this isn’t possible, you may still be able to move yourself to a safer place, such as the shoulder of the road. Note: Don’t do anything that will increase the likelihood of a follow-up crash.

It’s only natural to be scared after a motor vehicle collision. This is particularly true if you realize you’ve been injured.

Once you conduct a health check and receive professional medical treatment, you can double back on the cause of the crash. Uncover as much information as possible, as this will help you decide what to do next. If you have reason to believe that filing a lawsuit would be in your best interest, don’t hesitate to take the first step in doing so. You have legal rights and it’s up to you to protect them.
