A CAMPER DISCONNECTS FROM THE TRUCK TOWING IT, KILLS A MOTORIST

On behalf of Mike Breen June 20, 2017

A driver lost its life in a head-on crash involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and camper on U.S. 150 just before 6:00 p.m., on Monday, May 29, 2017. The Lincoln County, Kentucky, collision also injured three others. One of the individuals injured was a 10-month-old baby.

The Lincoln County sheriff reports that a camper was being hauled in the eastbound direction along U.S. 150 when it suddenly became disconnected from the truck that had been carrying it. This caused the camper to roll over into oncoming traffic. The operator of the SUV, who had been traveling in the westbound direction at the time, was struck head-on by the debris in the process.

Police kept this busy stretch of highway closed for various hours as they went about speaking with witnesses and taking measurements at the crash scene. They were able to determine that the SUV’s driver had attempted to take evasive action to avoid colliding with the camper. Although it was clear that an attempt was made to move into the shoulder of the busy two-lane roadway, the driver was unable to do so in time to avert the crash.

The SUV driver was killed on impact. A 10-month-old baby, who had also been riding in the car at the time, was airlifted from the crash scene. The infant was listed as being in critical condition. Two other occupants of the vehicle were also injured as well. It’s unclear as to whether their injuries were minor or life-threatening. Neither one of the occupants in the truck that was carrying the camper were hurt.

In this case, there’s a strong chance that the camper became disconnected from the truck that was carrying it for a number of reasons. In one case, it could have never been securely tethered to the truck. On the other hand, the truck’s driver could have potentially been driving too fast for conditions and lost his load. Police are continuing to investigate this crash in hopes of understanding why it occurred.

The family of the deceased SUV driver and injured baby may be entitled to funeral costs, medical expenses and other damages in this case. If you’ve been injured or have lost a loved one, you should consult with a Kentucky car crash attorney who can provide guidance as to legal remedies that can be pursued in your case.
